6th Annual Family 5k Walk/Run

You guys!!! The Family 5k Walk/Run is now less than THREE weeks away!!! How did that happen?!

I have been at my very worst at marketing the event this year. But, don't let that fool you...this year's event is coming together beautifully and will likely be the very best to date!! Click on the image above to register online now, or keep reading for more event information!

Event History-

The Family 5k Walk/Run was started by me and my two Besties (Chloe & Emily) in 2010 as a way to  get my little business (or idea of my business) involved in the community. I've dreamed of designing & manufacturing nursing bras since my oldest was born in 2008. The Family 5k became a part of my business journey (...a journey that is still very much in progress).

The idea behind the event was to help cultivate the acceptance and encouragement of breastfeeding in our American Society and on a local level. Breastfeeding is so normal, right? Yeah, that's what I think. But plenty of people still aren't supported in their decision to breastfeed.

I aligned my business with Best for Babes, my favorite breastfeeding organization, and all the event's entry fees benefitted the organization.

In 2011, Durango Pregnancy Center (a local organization) became another beneficiary of the event; with the proceeds split 50/50 between the two organizations.

In 2014, the event became Durango Pregnancy Center's primary fundraiser. The Family 5k Walk/Run is now run through the Durango Pregnancy Center (instead of Pretty-Bras for Nursing Moms, LLC) and is organized by the Family 5k Walk/Run committee (which I'm a member of).

Over the years, we've made small to substantial contributions to Best for Babes and Durango Pregnancy Center by using the Family 5k Walk/Run as a fundraising platform. The event continues to grow and is looked forward to by locals each year.

About the Family 5k Walk/Run-

The Event is very unique in that it is the only event of this nature that caters to the entire family. While we do time the runners and announce winners in the Men's & Women's classes, we only give awards to the winners of the Kids' 1 mile. Our runs are less about being competitive and more about getting out and being active as a family and community.

We have vendors and interactive booths for the kiddos, as well as a bounce house. Strollers and bikes are welcome on the course (or scooters or wagons) and Serious Delights provides brunch for the entire family. We always have amazing prizes donated for our giveaway (items for the entire family), and we've got the best 5k swag bags in the state (I'm pretty sure). In a nutshell, it's a steal of a deal, benefits two awesome organizations, and is pretty much just a fun outing for the family and that also happens to have a 5k & 1 mile run!!

This year's event-

This year's event will be held at the Durango Rec Center Amphitheater & Animas River Trail again. The site is beautiful and family friendly. Durango Fire & Rescue will be there to give first aid demonstrations and there just might even be a Fire TRUCK!!

The entry fees have changed a little...This year 5k entry fees are $30 instead of $25 and that price is for an individual of any age who wishes to participate in the 5k run; participants will receive an ever t-shirt this year #WootWoot, and the Kids' mile in now FREE!

There will again be a bounce house, games, vendor booths, and an amazing brunch provided by Serious Delights Bake House!! But this year, the giveaway items are unreal!!! Here's what's up for grabs:

Strider Bike & Helmet from 2nd Ave. Sports

Day Pack with Reservoir from Backcountry Experience

1 pair Men's Running Shoes with accessories (Gift value: $100)
1 pair Women's Running Shoes with accessories (Gift value: $100)

1 - $25 gift card Durango Joe's

1 - $25 gift card Top That Yogurt

So are you coming or what?!!! It's in less than 3 weeks!!!! Register online NOW and find all of the event details on the Event's Web Page!!

See you there!

Meet our Sponsors :: 5th annual family 5k walk/run

Hello! If you live around here, you've probably noticed the pretty 5k posters hanging in various locations around Bayfield, Durango, and Ignacio!

I figured I'd take a few minutes to remind you what the Family 5k Walk/Run is, and to introduce you to this year's fantastic sponsors!!

I've got Evley Love snoozing in the Moby and True & Elle West are taking their nap...I'll make this brief in hopes that I will be able to get it posted today, and I know you're busy too!

The Family 5k Walk/Run is the Durango Pregnancy Center's annual fundraiser. DPC is a faith based, not for profit, organization that cares for the people of our community by listening and offering support to those who are facing expected or unexpected pregnancy, as well as any concerns that may coincide with sex and pregnancy. The center is filled with love and is essential to the overall health and wellbeing of our community.

Despite the fact that DPC does not receive any state or federal funding, all of their services are free. Generous individuals and businesses within our community are responsible for keeping the Durango Pregnancy Center's doors open! The Family 5k Walk/Run is a fun way to get out together and raise awareness & money for the center!

All of the Family 5k Walk/Run's proceeds are split 50/50 between DPC and Best for Babes Foundation. BFB is also a non-profit organization who's mission, to support women throughout their breastfeeding journey no matter how big or small, is inline with DPC's mission to love, educate, help, and give hope. To learn more about our local Durango Pregnancy Center, and to donate, click here. To learn more about and to donate to the Best for Babes Foundation, click here. You can go ahead and register online for the 5th annual Family 5k Walk/Run by clicking on the poster above, or keep on reading for sponsor info and this year's delicious brunch menu!!

Yours truly is of course the Family 5k Walk/Run's presenting sponsor. I've got some fun things planned...stay tuned to the PRETTYblog for the details of our interactive booth and our prize giveaways at this year's 5k!

The following sponsors make the Family 5k Walk/Run possible. Thanks to their generosity, 100% of the monies earned from event entry fees and interactive booths are donated to DPC and BFB- none needs to be kept to fund the event itself!

*Sponsors are listed in order of generosity. Please click on each name to be redirected to their websites, and learn more about each business/organization!

Serious Delights has sponsored each of the five annual Family 5k Walk/Runs to date, and each year their contribution becomes more & more impressive!! Serious Delights Bakery is dedicated to inspiring happiness by creating the finest fresh baked goods. They bake from scratch, by combining organic & local ingredients with sustainable business practices, integrity and an extraordinary enthusiasm for detail! For me, Serious Delights has become as much a part of the Family 5k Walk/Run as DPC & BFB! I always look forward to the brunch that they provide for the event. Without further ado, here's this year's brunch menu:

Traditional mini croissants
Mini smoked ham & white cheddar mini croissants
Roasted jalapeno & smoked bacon mini croissants
Sauteed spinach & goat cheese mini croissants
Mini cinnamon rolls
Mini lemon coconut muffins (gluten free)
Mini pumpkin spice muffins (gluten free)
Mini chocolate dipped macaroons
Mini chocolate chip cookies
Mini oatmeal raisin cookies

Um, YUM right!!!?! If you were on the fence about registering for the event, I bet you're not now! We will also have fresh fruit and coffee from Starbucks!! To heck with running! Come to eat and donate to two amazing organizations! Sheesh...and I've said nothing about the incredible prize giveaway and all the fun that's in store for the kiddos! Btw, I'm totally kidding about the running part. The Walk/Run along the river is all part of it- Uh-Maze-Ing. Only in Durango. For Real.

Alright. So much for brief. I can't seem to do it. There's simply too much to tell you! The family 5k is simply too much fun!! Register for the Family 5k Walk/Run NOW online, or print your mail-in registration form and mail it by this coming Saturday, or simply show up on race-day. Note the date, location, and same-day registration arrival time on the poster above.

*Perks to registering online NOW: Save $10 on all registration fees before August 16 {prices will INCREASE $10 after August 16}, and the first 100 registrants will receive an awesome goodie bag {can't be guaranteed on race day, but is likely when registering online!}.

2013 family 5k walk/run results!!

Kids' mile runners as they took off from the start! Thank you Makai Productions for the wonderful photos! Like them on Facebook here and view the entire photo album below.

This year's event was a huge success thanks to you...

Sponsors, participants and volunteers make the family 5k walk/run possible each year! This was the fourth annual, largest, and smoothest running event yet! We raised funds to donate to Durango Pregnancy Center and Best for Babes Foundation. Both organizations are very worthy causes who's missions are in-line with that of Pretty-Bras for Nursing Moms, LLC {Pretty by JL}, the event's presenting sponsor. I encourage you to click on each name to learn more about them!

The event raised more than $1,300 in entry fees, which will be split 50/50 between our two wonderful beneficiaries! As if that weren't cool enough...there were two teams fundraising independently, one for DPC and one for BfB, by using the family 5k as their fundraising platform.

Team We've Got Your Back, Babe! members who participated in the family 5k raised over $400 above and beyond the entry fees to be donated to Best for Babes Foundation! This team is the first ever to participate in a national fitness challenge that backs breastfeeding! You can learn more about joining/supporting the team here!

Team Run Baby Run worked together to fundraise more than $7,000 for our Durango Pregnancy Center! May we have a big round of applause for Tracey, the team's organizer, and Team Run Baby Run?!!! There were more than twenty smiling faces running, skipping, and walking on behalf of DPC this year! Contact Valerie at DPC to learn more about future fundraising opportunities by emailing valerie@durangopregnancy.com!

click for FUN details!
We honored & remembered, wonderful wife, mother, friend, and DPC supporter, Cindy McLean at this year's family 5k by filling our "Inspire" cards. The cards were then given to her family following the event. We miss and love Cindy very much, but she was certainly with us in spirit!

hello September & goodbye Facebook...

Well, and hello to you!! The fall air brings about a few changes and not just in temperature.

I fairly well collapsed following this year's family 5k walk/run a week and a half ago. The event was eight months in the making and boiled down to six hours in the doing. My family and I left our house at 6 am on Saturday and we were back by noon; needless to say, also all ready for a nap! It seems crazy how so much work and planning can go into a two hour event. It's a little like Christmas in the respect that there is all the anticipation of Christmas morning...with so much thought put into gifts, time and money spent on decorations, months of Christmas music on the radio {I'd replace that with months of emailing for 5k purposes} and then poof...it's over until next year. Gifts that might have taken all year to save for were opened in twenty minutes. Decorations that took weeks to place, need to come down and be packed up. Giddiness and anticipation replaced with exhaustion, and hopefully, contintedness.

Family 5k planning is all in good fun and spirit, and was certainly very worthwhile. This year's event was our fourth annual, and was the largest and smoothest running 5k we've had yet. As excited as I am about it, I'm equally relieved that it is over. For all that was great about it, there is as well, just as much room for improvement. It is time to put together a 5k committee to handle growth, and to provide adequate organization & management for future year's events. I will be working with Valerie of Durango Pregnancy Center in the coming months to organize the committee. Please be in touch with either of us if you would like to be involved!

Since this year's event took me the better part of a year to put together, it's also going to take me some time to clean up. I have been working on this year's family 5k wrap up for the past week, and plan to get the details & thank you email out in a few days. In it will be found: timing results, a link to view and order pictures, and fundraising results. All sponsors and participants of the event should already be on the email list. But, if you're not sure if you are and would like to receive family 5k related emails, you may do so by clicking here to subscribe.

So now, here's a little on the changes I'm faced with this fall. To cut through the crap and just say it like it is...I've been neglectful of my family for the past two months, which sounds like a huge contradiction when pairing "planning the family 5k" with "neglecting my family". At any rate, I'm not blaming the 5k. Putting on and organizing an event like it would be taxing on anyone if the time to do so weren't a part of their day, or if there wasn't an allowance for the time somewhere. It's no one's fault but my own that their isn't a time allowance for it. Which is why I will be forming a committee.

I'm a stay at home mom. Anyone who has ever been a stay at home mom knows that there isn't a whole lot of time to spend on extra things. Extra things in my world are classified in our household as "working on my stuff". Working on my stuff can be broken down as follows: writing/blogging, making Pretty by JL accessories, planning/executing the yearly family 5k, marketing Pretty by JL products {including Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, email marketing/newsletters, graphic & web design}, networking/fundraising event participation, stocking/selling via online stores like Etsy & Goodsie, product photos, building line sheets & catalogs, finding/building wholesale relationships, order fulfillment, planning, dreaming, hoping, dreaming, crying, pulling my hair out, dreaming, sketching, trying to convince my husband there's a point to any of it, and more dreaming.

Sound like fun? Lot's of it is. Some of it isn't. Most people who know me well, know that I'm obsessed with working on my stuff. I do very little else with my extra time. I've been saying for years that, "I'm working on it now in hopes that I will have created a career for myself by the time my kids start school." Why might I put it like that? Why not just create a career now?...

Because being a stay at home mom is the dream. My dream. The dream I had before I dreampt up PBfNM. I'm already living it, and am lucky enough to get to! I want to enjoy it and see it through. But, I've been so busy laying the foundation of my "career" that I forgot what the whole point was. I've been saying lately how much I wish True were in school. I've been willing Elle West to be 3 1/2 and in pre-school. I haven't been camping, fishing, or horse back riding once this summer with my husband. I've felt guilty for enjoying all the time I put into my stuff and rushing all the rest...in essence, robbing my family of time with me, and me of [precious] time with them, in order to give more to working on my stuff. I've done it financially, too. We eat beans so I can buy silk...well, we'd eat beans anyway, but you get where I'm going with this.

The point is, there is too much to do in a day. Social media is thrown at us now from every direction. I have more on my plate than I can touch and I haven't even looked at a quarter of what's out there...a quarter of what I even know of...I'm certain there's more!

A few years back when I was writing my business plan for PBfNM, I also wrote my life's mission. Sound crazy?...yeah, well I sort of am crazy. Anyway, this past Saturday night {one week following this year's family 5k} while trying to fall asleep I decided that I needed to get off of Facebook. To be sure it made any sense, and that it wasn't just some late-night-Jerry-McGuire-style-epiphany {which in all reality it probably is} I started to say my mission in my head...to see where Facebook fit in.

I will have, hold, and grow the joys this life offers me; realizing my ultimate potential and happiness.
&
I will let go of each joy, gracefully, when its time comes.

Facebook's time has come. This is it's gracious ending for me. What once was a joy is no longer. I find myself giving it far more time and attention than other, higher ranking, extras. I've tried "discipline", "posting/checking once daily", and "time allotments". I've failed at them all. Once I login I find myself fascinated, over stimulated and obsessed with whatever my Facebook task at hand may be. I've mulled this over for a few days and know it's the right thing to do because I'm relieved.

I'm going to can my Twitter account, too, because I never use it. I don't even know how to tweet. I will stay on LinkedIn for now because it's meant to be resourceful...I only get on if I need to. I will stay on Pinterest because it's also resourceful and I'm in no way obsessed. I will use Instagram as my primary source of social media. I like to take pictures, but I don't feel obligated to. I also enjoy seeing other people's posts on Instagram more than I do anywhere else. You may follow me there @prettybyjl. Tag your Pretty by JL accessory photos with the hashtag #prettybyjl to share them...I'd love that!

One of my very favorite things to do is post to my blog, and I've only recently learned that about myself. I'm just getting started and want to try to post to it daily. That is something that makes me nervous about leaving Facebook. Most of my blog readership comes from the links I post on Facebook. But, I'm not going to worry about that. I post to my blog because I enjoy it; as much as I appreciate your reading it...I'd post to it, and will continue, anyway. If you don't already receive daily PRETTYblog posts in your email, you can subscribe to those here, or consider following along on Bloglovin'.

If you are my friend on Facebook, you are still my friend!!! Call me, text me or email, and I will do the same to you! Business partners, it's no different, you are a friend!...call me, text me or email! My contact info can be found from the blog's about page and from www.prettybyjl.com. This decision feels very selfish from the friend standpoint because I've really enjoyed connecting with friends via Facebook that I don't get to see often {or ever}. But I've got to let you go on Facebook. I would LOVE to be in touch with you here, or read your blog if you have one!!! Leave it in the comments so I can follow along if I don't already! I'm hoping to read more of my favorite blogs...I think it would be fun to do that for entertainment and to pass time instead of scrolling the Facebook feed. I hope to connect better.

I'll be here again tomorrow. I have lots of fun things to share :)

Love, JL

If your child is too small, simply write their name and age on a blank note card to place in the jar. You may choose their prize if he or she wins!

In the same way as the adult drawing, we will call a child's name from the drawing jar {pun totally intended} and allow the present child to pick his or her prize! She or he will have to be present to win...Get it?! Got it! Good! *Only one entry per child, please.

pretty family 5k posters

I had a super busy and productive day in Durango yesterday, and got a bunch of our posters hung for this year's family 5k walk/run!

Designing the family 5k's poster each year is pretty much the first thing we do, after reserving the park. We've always used illustrations by Little Lion Studio as the design's base, and then design all of the other event collateral around it. Chloe, of course, does the design work, and pretty much all I do is a lot of oohing and aahing! I'm obviously a big fan of this year's poster design, but it makes me want to look back at previous year's posters to reminisce a little!

2013
2012
2011
2010

Aren't they lovely?!!

Here is some of the other event collateral I mentioned, and that was derived from our poster graphic...the kids' mile awards. I LOVE them. They make me want to run the kids' mile :)

This is the base graphic, and illustration by Little Lion Studio. You can purchase rights to use illustrations like this from iStock Photos...

It just makes me happy. All of them have, from all four years. Now when you see those pretty posters hanging around town you can imagine my joy while hanging them, and the oohs and aahs that they've been subjected to!

What's nutty is that those are just the 5k's posters and kid awards! We have a fantastic event planned this year, and with even more graphic design stemming from this gorgeous illustration! You can visit the event webpage to register online or to print your mail-in registration form by clicking HERE! I hope to see you at this year's family 5k walk/run, on Saturday, August 31 {Labor Day Weekend}, in Durango!

Serious Delights :: the family 5k menu!

{Products, People, Places}

So, it's lookin' like we're in for two p.p.p.s this week {Products, People, Places}! I've got to take a short moment to gush about Serious Delights, the amazingness that is the bakery that is found inside of Nature's Oasis!! This time of year, you can also find them at the Durango Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings, 8 am to noon.

They have a beautiful new website which can be found by clicking on their logo above, and they've got an active facebook page that you can like here. My personal favorites, since I have a sweet tooth, are their chocolate mousse and {when in season, NOW!} strawberry rhubarb pies! Here is a photo of their strawberry rhubarb mini pie that I shared on facebook last summer...

...I'm not a big fan of sharing my strawberry rhubarb mini pies from Serious Delights, so I enjoyed this one outside at nap time ;)

Anyway, so lucky for us, Robert and Kelly love our family 5k! They've sponsored the event each of the four years it has existed! Robert got the menu to me for this year's event last week, and I just have to share!

Here's what we're gonna have:

The following varieties of freshly baked mini croissants:
Traditional (unfilled)
Smoked Ham & White Cheddar
Roasted Jalapeno & Smoked Bacon
Sauteed Spinach & Feta

Also freshly baked mini Cinnamon Rolls!

Plus the following gluten-free options:
Mini lemon coconut muffins
Mini pumpkin spice muffins
Mini chocolate dipped macaroons

Umm, does that not alone make the family 5k worth coming to?!!! Durango Joe's is providing coffee, and I'm making my watermelon limeade. That's just the food. Wait 'til you see what else is going on!!

A ginormous Thank YOU to Serious Delights for feeding us well...

See YOU at the family 5k walk run!! Register or print your mail-in registration form HERE.
