love at first sight :: holiday 2013 sneak peek

I have been burning the midnight oil this week working on the first batch of Holiday Wish Bracelets. I have absolutely zero shame in admitting that I'm in love with them. Go ahead and click on each photo to see a nice, big, PRETTY picture!

Holiday Classics

Holiday Blues

I'm not going to give you all the color combo specifics now. I've got to keep movin'. I've got 200+ photos to sort and edit, and packaging to pick up from the printer {+photos to take of that!} before I can get these up and for sale in the shop. But, I thought the pictures were just too good not to share now!

I will tell you that I've got Classics & Blues on in those last two pictures, for a five-stack. They are too fun not to have fun with + chunky stacks are in! And yes, I did make my wishes…I actually made the same wish five times. I'll let you know how it turns out once we get into the new year ;) Are you unfamiliar with Pretty by JL Wish Bracelets?? If so, you can learn more about them here.

So, these lovelies aren't up in the shop yet. But if you live in the area, come by Dietz Market tomorrow {Saturday} in Durango. I will be there from 11-2pm giving Dietz customers first dibs on holiday wish bracelets and gift boxes. If I run out, I will take orders and deliver them to Dietz next week for customers to pickup, or for Dietz to ship. That way customers may still take advantage of Dietz's free shipping storewide in honor of their Open House week!

Wish Bracelet success! >>---> testimonials

I purchased three wish bracelets from Jenny in the late summer of 2013. I knew exactly what I was going to wish for before purchasing them! My wish was so big that I thought "hey I'm going to wish for the same thing three times!" That way if the first one didn't come true fast enough I would have two more for back up! Ha and to my surprise my wish came true!! On October 3rd the Lord blessed us with a sweet little baby :) Come June 2014 we will get to meet our son! Thanks to my Lord & Savior and my fabulous wish bracelets I had the greatest wish come true!!!
-Natacia N.

Do you see these knots that the two bracelets have made together and those beads are holding strong!!! These wishes obviously are very complicated and need a great deal of time!!!! Love them!!!

time to sort the beads :: dawn at our house

We had another early morning today. The kids got up at about 5:30. By the time 8 a.m. rolled around, True had finished his lesson and Elle West was down for a nap.

We've got wish bracelets on our minds, what with the recent delivery of beads and all. Holiday Wish Bracelets are coming in an assortment of sparkling beads & silk...you are looking at a bag of about 5,000 Diva beads.

I had told True, after placing the order, that he'd get to help me sort them.

He started very enthusiastically; becoming more and more methodical about his technique.

There are seventeen different diva bead colors. Some of them only very slightly in color. They come in little bags of approximately 100, and assorted...hence the reason for sorting them.

About half way through his first bag, True needed a rest.

He got back after it, but rested in regular intervals until he got the job done.

Remember the Dunkin Donut guy from the 80s?...time to make the donuts. I just can't help but to compare. Only 4,916 more beads to sort!

Actually, between the two of us, we got about 500 sorted. True earned $3. I told him I'd give him a $1 for each bag he sorted. He did one all by himself, and did a fantastic job. We sorted four together...it's more fun with company. Then he moved on to legos. I'm sure you know me well enough by now to know that I'd rather sort beads {by a lot} than play with legos. To each their own.

make a wish saturday :: seeking rightful owner

I made this pretty little Natural Beauty Wish Bracelet for a very specific pretty little girl. Only...she's a very specific little girl of whom I also don't know.

I started it last week while I was working on an order for one of my retailers. I don't normally make child wish bracelets, and usually what I do make are of a one-size-fits-most variety {approx. 10" in length}.

This one, ever so prettily and seemingly purposefully, finished up measuring only 8" in length. Hmm, I thought. I had used the same size piece of silk as usual, or darn close. But there was no way I was going to get any more length out of it.

What struck me as even more interesting was that the mini bracelet turned out proportional to that of its longer counterparts {I intentionally make the left side of wish bracelets shorter than the right side}. How did I manage that? I wondered as I began tying the last bead into place. It's as if the magical little beauty made itself; I was simply the channel through which its inevitable existence became tangible.

Sound a little hokey? Well, I couldn't come up with any other reason for how this happened. Of all the wish bracelets I've made, of all the mistakes, I've never created a perfect mini version...and how interesting that this happened on accident.

I set the finished bracelet aside and completed the order I was working on. Once I was done, I picked up the little Natural Beauty and held it, momentarily contemplating it's disassembly. Then it struck me...it belongs to someone already; a little someone; a little someone with an important wish.

I tagged it and set it back on my desk, where it's sat for nearly two weeks.

The bracelet will fit a child who's wrist measures between 4-5"...likely someone between the ages of 3 & 5. I don't offer these in my Etsy shop for sale for children because the potential choking hazard frightens me in children under the age of three. After all, the 10-12mm round beads are meant to fall off the dangling ends. You can read the Pretty by JL Wish Bracelet instructions for use here.

The mini Natural Beauty is strung on taupe silk, and has three amber beads and two pink ones. I will send this bracelet to its rightful owner for free. If you believe you know who it belongs to, simply stake its claim in the comments below. I will email you for appropriate shipping information.

are you subscribed? :: get a FREE wish bracelet

Well hello! As usual my blogging plans for the day changed...I wanted to show you a darling bracelet that I made for Elle West, but I've recently gotten a few new subscriptions to the PRETTYblog. Umm, why would that change my plans for the day you might be wondering. Well, because I've recently added a "Promotions" page to the blog. It is located at the top; just under the big pretty PRETTYblog header.

Anyway, the current promotion is that I'm sending a FREE wish bracelet to subscribers of any of our four mailing lists. The thing is, I can only do it for those who also enter their name & mailing address while subscribing, instead of only entering their email address {which is all that is required}. This is new to the signup forms...they used to only ask for your email address.

By entering your name & mailing address, it means that I can send you stuff. The sorts of things you will receive from me in the mail are simply: your FREE wish bracelet, very special promotions, and very special invitations {like trunk show invites}. I certainly will not be doing many mailings, so you don't need to worry about my mail to you cluttering up your mailbox...that is also true of the emails I send you. I simply won't send that many emails either. And of the mail you do receive from me, it will quite likely be fun, and at the very least, pretty!

Okay, if you are not currently subscribed to a Pretty by JL mailing list and would like to be, click here to choose the list that is the best fit for you. As I mentioned earlier, I send out very few emails and don't see that changing anytime soon. So, don't be scared. If you sign up to receive PRETTYblog posts in your email, you will receive one email per day containing the day before's posts. I don't blog daily usually...but even if I do, you won't receive more than one email per day. You can choose to sign up to any one of the four lists, by clicking on the light blue title. You may, of course, sign up for more than one list, too. However, I will likely only send you one Wish Bracelet {but-cha never know!}.

Alright, so now for the real reason I changed my plans today...IF you are already subscribed to one of the lists, but did so before adding your mailing address was an option OR you simply didn't add it because you didn't see the awesome reason to do so, here is how you can do it now:
  1. Find and open an email that you were sent from the list you are subscribed to. I searched using the words "pretty blog" in my Gmail account, and my most recent post email popped right up.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom of your email and click on "update subscription preferences".
  3. Now you should be in a form where you are able to add any information that might be missing, likely your name & address.
  4. Enter your info and save it!
  5. Lastly, IF you would like to receive your FREE wish bracelet for being a PRETTY subscriber...hit "Reply" to that email. Type in "subscription preferences updated" and send it to me! Then I will find your address via the appropriate list, and send you your Wish Bracelet!!
It's just that I haven't promoted this promotion at all and it pains me when new subscriptions come in without an address! If you already have a wish bracelet, or don't think you'd wear one, I'm sure there is someone in your life who it'd make a great gift for! I've been hearing a lot of "Wish Bracelets" and "stocking stuffers" in the same sentence lately! You can learn and see all there is to about Pretty by JL Wish Bracelets from the official page by clicking here.

While we are on the Wish Bracelet subject I want to share a couple more photos with you to give you an idea about how they wear. See the official page to find wish bracelet instructions...okay, so you tie them on and then what?

Well, right after you tie them on they look like they do in the photo at the start of this post. After about a week you might start losing beads. Whether you do or not, your bracelet will have become more loose, and the center beads will likely be moving around on the silk {instead of fitting stationary in the middle of the bracelet like they started}. Same is true for week two, and you may think the bracelet looks a little scroungy. This is what those same wish bracelets above look like one month later >>--->

This is a week later, a different angle, and with a Pretty by JL wrap >>--->

How long will they last? Well, it's up to you with yours! I've lost all the beads but one, on one bracelet. But, I still have them all on because I like them. One bracelet's wish came true right away upon losing beads, one didn't, and the other is still working. That's what the guarantee is for. Click here to learn about that. The guarantee can be claimed whether I sent you a wish bracelet for free, whether you bought it, or whether it was a gift. A Pretty by JL Wish Bracelet is a Pretty by JL Wish Bracelet regardless of how you happened upon it!

I'm excited about you taking advantage of this promotion! I can't say how long I'll run it, but definitely feel free to share it in any way that you see fit! Your friends will surely appreciate the opportunity ;) As well, when your wish comes true {because it will eventually}, email me if you'd like to share your testimonial at jl@prettybrasfornursingmoms.com!

we made Wish Bracelets :: how it started

You are lookin' at me, and the first three wish bracelets that I ever made {and one of our backyard gates and my oldest pair of Frye boots...and an awesome Navajo beaded Thunderbird buckle. Anyway...}

I asked Gabe to snap this phone photo of me before I headed over to 2013's Girls Night Out, an annual fundraiser for the Women's Resource Center of Durango. I was asked to be a vendor there. I desperately wanted to be, so I came up with the Pretty by JL Wish Bracelet. You can read more about the actual epiphany behind the wish bracelet, and more about the Women's Resource Center event here.

Even though I did a post showing the wish bracelets before, I count this as the beginning. Because this was the evening I created them for, and it was also the evening I learned how much people would like them. I had had no idea what to expect. I just wanted something fun, pretty and cost appropriate to give as gifts at the event. I'm really glad that I took the time to pose for the above photo...because it's the only one I'd get. Mary and I were so busy at Girls Night Out making wish bracelets that we didn't get to look around, get anything to eat, and we each only took one pee break {out of necessity} while the other tended to our orders.

I'm also really glad that I took the time to take the one photo that I did of our table before the event actually started, and after we'd finished setting up. I figured that I'd get more. But as it turned out, there wouldn't be any time to take photos, and had I just taken the time...they would have been pictures of crowds of women; not of our table, which was quite pretty if I do say so myself.

Below are crops of the original one photo. I shared them on Instagram the next day. We displayed Pretty by JL summer accessories, Watermelon Limeade, a custom 3 color heart bracelet set, and catalogs from our recent trunk show on the left half of it >>--->

<---<< On the other half, we set out a pretty platter of silk, and glass dishes holding the wish bracelet beads. Then we went to work! Mary, a wonderful friend who volunteered to help me {I am SO thankful that she did!}, is practicing her wish bracelet technique in the below photo. She agreed to help without really knowing what we were even going to do, and again, I thought I'd have the opportunity to take more photos. I would have asked her to look up and smile had I known that this would be it! But, she looks fabulous anyway >>--->

Once all the pretty ladies started arriving, it didn't take Mary and I long to realize that we'd need to start a list {or order form} since it would take us more than five minutes to make each bracelet. We ended up having each woman write down her name and silk color choice on the list. Then we'd have her also choose five beads that she'd then put in a plastic bag and label with her name. So, what Mary is doing in the above photo is really all she did for the next 2 1/2 hours, and so did I.

The girls of Girls Night Out loved our wished bracelets! They'd approach our table {often with a glass of champagne in hand} and inquire about what we were doing...I'd give them the spiel {which they loved} and then they'd fondle the silks and debate about which beads to choose. Several of them would say, "I'm terrible with choices like this..." I'd reply with something like, "No, you just like pretty things and we get it! I'm terrible in the same way!"

Once the women left their wish bracelet orders, Mary and I would tell them to mingle for a bit and then come back. We'd cross off names on the list as we worked our way through it. That way when someone came back they'd know if their wish bracelet was finished or not, before checking the racks we hung them on. We had all sorts of visitors. Some women came back frequently to find that it would still be a little while before hers was finished, some just sort of hung around and watched us from a small distance, and some didn't come back at all!! We blamed that on the champagne, and on the shuttle buses that snuck up on unsuspecting-fun-havers near the evening's close...threatening to leave without them!

All night, Mary and I would only break from wish bracelet making to tie them on. It's a bit of a magical moment when pausing before making the second half of the square knot, and looking up to the recipient to ask, "Did you make your wish?" There is always a moment where she looks briefly away before saying yes. Even when I tie them on people now, I wonder a fuzz about what they're wishing for and can't help but get excited.

Mary and I only ended up making about thirty wish bracelets during the 2 1/2 hour duration of the event, between the both of us. But, we worked solid and appreciated the enthusiastic oohs and ahhs of the girls who visited our table. As the shuttle buses pulled away and we looked up to see the other vendors packing up, we both realized that we were starving and cold! {August in SW Colorado will do that to ya!} We'd seen and heard all the fun that the Rhinestone Cowgirls and Diamond Divas of Girls Night Out had been having...with their bling tops and jeans, their glasses of champagne, and their little plates of exotic looking goodness that was food. So we decided that we needed a girls night out of our own!

Below is a tired but smiling Mary while we waited for our drinks at Tequila's, a wonderful local Mexican place! She has on a Natural Beauty Wish Bracelet that I had insisted she make for herself while getting ready for the event. We may not have had any champagne or sushi with the others girls...but we sure did enjoy our dinner and girls night out of two!

Girls Night Out raised over $30,000 for the Women's Resource Center {you can read more about it here}. It also got me thinking about where else we could go with Pretty by JL Wish Bracelets! I had a lot of fun, majorly thanks to Mary, and we stumbled across something pretty special! Wish Bracelet obsession :: Dietz Market display

Well, hello! It's been a whole week since I've blogged and I want to check in before I really get going again. As seems to be the norm lately, my posts are anything but balanced...which is nothing more than a reflection of my life. I  tend to focus on something and then it's all anyone hears about. So now enter Wish Bracelets!!

I came up with Pretty by JL Wish Bracelets for a local fundraiser which I told you about in this post. I do plan to do a follow up post to that one, as well as an instructions for use post, more on the Wish Bracelet Guarantee, and a running post of testimonials. Hence my warning you in advance, there is going to be lots about our wish bracelets on the PRETTYblog over the next week. I'm working on getting the official page up to speed!

Now, to touch on life for just a moment...Elle West and I have a cold. I spent the entire day in my pajamas yesterday which is highly unusual for me. There is nothing like being sick to take all the drive and ambition right out of a person. I knew that my want-to-do list was a mile long, but simply didn't care. I sat in the yard while the kids played for three hours yesterday morning; in my pajamas, slippers, and sweatshirt; soaking up the warm fall sun, and while nodding off continually in between Elle West's visits to snuggle.

When we finally came in for lunch, we all decided on summer sausage and crackers and I sat in the sun that was coming in from the kitchen window. The kids were down for their nap by 11:30 am, and I crawled into my bed for a nap as well. We woke up at 1:30; I started dinner at 3:30, and I did a lot of sitting while the kids played games on the iPad and colored.

In the time between my last post a week ago, and now, I delivered my first Wish Bracelet retail display to Dietz Market in Durango; spent an evening in Pagosa Springs at the Hot Springs and for dinner, with the kids and Gabe; accompanied Gabe to Rangely for two days, two nights, and visited our faithful fifth wheel where the kids and I just hung out, and then I woke up yesterday with a cold. BUT, after my day of extreme rest, and probably from all of the vitamin D I soaked up, I feel amazingly better today. Elle West and I are now just stuffy and sneezy with runny noses. Most of my aches and sinus pain is gone, and Elle West is sleeping through the night.

I feel like the PRETTYblog has recently lost the little perspective into my day to day life that I like it to have, because I always have so much Pretty by JL stuff that I want to share. I have lots of regular ol' life stuff to share, too, but it's not what always gets first dibs on my blog!

Anyway, welcome to my Wish Bracelet obsession...this is just the beginning for about a week! As we get settled in to fall, I'd like to think that my posts will become a bit more balanced. But, then again, that might not ever be the case!

So, a couple weeks ago I was in Dietz Market {a local favorite in Durango for 30+ years}. I've always loved the store, but hadn't thought of them as a potential retailer until my friend Mary mentioned it. Mary helped me make our Wish Bracelets for Girls' Night Out {more to come on that later}. As I browsed, I convinced myself that there wouldn't be a better time to inquire about it than right then. Everything was beautiful, and it seemed like Pretty by JL Wish Bracelets would fit right in. Lucky for me, Kay, the owner was there. I quickly told her about the accessories I make, why I do it, and how I began making Wish Bracelets. Her interest was peaked and she loved that I was a local artist...inviting me to an annual event they host featuring local artists and offering free shipping store wide, November 2nd-10th, and without even seeing my products! I told her that I'd be in the following week with Wish Bracelet samples.

When I brought them in the next week, she loved them. She had strong ideas on how they should be displayed, that their story needed to be framed and part of the display, and that there needed to be photos of the wish bracelets being worn. They needed to lay flat, on a background, versus being hung. She put me in charge of creating the display. Up to that point, I had only began to brainstorm a tag design. She liked the tag plan, but was adamant about the importance of display, and a bit less interested in the tag. However, she did insist that the tag mention that our Wish Bracelets are handmade in Colorado. I absorbed the words she spoke...Kay knows retail and knows our community. There has never been a time that I've walked into the store and did not want to buy armloads of goods. Her advice on the matter was like gold.

My visit with Kay was pretty darn stimulating. It was Sunday and I wanted to deliver the display the following Saturday. I had nothing more than ideas and Wish Bracelets. When I got home, I started looking around our yard. Sound strange? Well, that's what I always do first. I see what we have that might work {for whatever I'm working on}, and I like rustic/natural sorts of things...which is why I start outside. Kay had also mentioned the use of "wood" several times in our conversation. Dietz Market has a very rustic/natural/barn-wood & iron/warm feel to it. My tastes would be a naturally perfect fit for a Dietz Market display.

While I let my mind work on the elements of the display, I picked two more wish bracelets to wear for photographs {I already had one on}. While I was at it, I made a wish for each. Gabe helped me take pictures on Monday and I got those, tag info, and graphic ideas to Chloe {my go-to graphic designer}. Then I looked around outside some more. I needed Gabe, again.

I had all sorts of ideas for the display, but nothing was fitting together quite right. It was all just a jumble of ideas, and the display would need some sort of construction {not something I could do, or certainly not in four days anyway}. So, I asked my dear-construction-expert-husband to come outside to look at things with me. I stood at an old weathered table next to a junk pile of ours explaining bits and pieces of what Kay had mentioned; interjecting my ideas that coordinated with what I thought she had in mind. I'd say, "I keep thinking about this tin." He'd say, "Rusted or treated {shiny} {because we have both}?" When I said rusted, but voiced my worries about cleaning the rusted surface he dismissed it casually saying that we could spray it with shellac for a nice finish. When I mentioned, "I keep thinking about old crates...like pop crates..." He said, "Like the one sitting by my printer with paper and wires in it?" It went on like that, and I kid you not, within thirty minutes we had all the pieces for an amazing display worthy of Dietz Market! He got out his tin snips and cut a piece to size. I found a barn-wood frame hanging in True & Elle West's room that fit in our crate perfectly! Over the next few days, Gabe put the finishing touches on the display, Chloe sent me some amazing graphics, and I tagged wish bracelets! Here's how it all turned out >>----->

Here it is in Dietz Market! >>----->

Well, what do you think?! Kay l.o.v.e.d. it. She positioned them by the scarves, which I thought was quite appropriate. They are just to the left of the front door! If you happen to stop in, let me know what you think of them, and the display, in person!

Putting that display together was SO much fun...it is hard for me to explain what work like this does for my soul. Aahhh. As if the wish bracelets weren't cool enough already...oh, don't worry, you're gonna hear more about them!! Click here to see the official page...when the text is blue, it's linked with the specified heading info!

By the way, now we also have pages with Retailer & Wholesale information! Have a look to see where you can find Pretty by JL in your area! Let us know if you have a retail location and would like to carry Pretty by JL accessories, or feel free to suggest a retail location where you feel Pretty by JL would be a nice fit!

Girls' Night Out :: wish bracelets

>>----->
<-----<<

Pretty by JL is going to be there!! Girls Night Out is the most looked forward to event of the year by women in the Four Corners area...it's the Women's Resource Center of Durango's largest fundraiser and is always a fantastic time!

Usually, the family 5k walk/run falls on the Saturday following Girls Night Out. So, I have been unable to attend. But this year, since the 5k is on Labor Day Weekend and NOT on the same weekend as Girls Night Out, I get to go!!! Not only am I going, but I will be a vendor there! Be sure to look for the Pretty by JL booth because this is what we're doing...

...Pretty by JL *Wish Bracelets*!

When I was approached about being a vendor at this year's event, I knew instantly that I wanted to be one. The Women's Resource Center has helped my venture along since the beginning, and continues to be a sponsor of our family 5k walk/run, benefiting the Durango Pregnancy Center and Best For Babes Foundation, annually. Since I was already planning on attending this year, my exhibiting is a natural and perfect fit...I get to be there and give a little back to the Women's Resource Center! Win Win!!

The challenge I faced was figuring out what to do. They were looking for vendors who could offer an interactive booth for guests, and that also pamper them in some way. Most of the Pretty by JL accessories, however pampering they may be, are extremely time consuming and costly to make. But, I told Mandy that I'd come up with something.

I went bead shopping via a supplier I normally use looking for a less expensive way to make something worthy of the Pretty by JL label. I figured that I could use scrap silk, inexpensive beads and viola{!} have a-something-interactive-and-pampering to offer the Rhinestone Cowgirls and Diamond Divas of Girls Night Out! Well...inexpensive isn't easy for me. It's just not. The beads certainly are not cheap, but I am happy with their price. However, I'm not so sure that I can get by with only using scrap silk. Full size pieces will be necessary for many wish bracelets. But, I LOVE the design I came up with! For me, excitement generally always overrides cost, so we're good to go!! Each guest of Girls Night Out will get to choose her own silk color, and from a variety of beads to create her own, custom, Pretty by JL *Wish Bracelet* {each a $10 value} for free!! I love them so much, that I plan to start offering them in the Pretty by JL accessory mix via our Etsy shop...so, stay tuned! In the meanwhile, here's what Girls Night Out guest will get to choose from...

The Diva Wish Bracelet

here's the beads...

bubbu-BLING!

The Natural Beauty Wish Bracelet

the beads have little silver tinsel pieces inside...

pretty :)

The Out-of-this-World Wish Bracelet

these just scream coolness...

...and yum.

Each guest will get to choose from the above beads and the below silks while supplies last...

Now that you've seen them, you may still be wondering, Well what IZzz a Wish Bracelet???. What you just saw...is Pretty by JL's twist on the nostalgic classic. Upon tying it on you will make a wish. When you lose beads, it falls off, or you decide to cut it off {that part is nontraditional, but it'll work for Pretty by JL purposes} your wish will come true! So make it a good one!!!

In addition to the fun we'll be having at our booth, I will also be donating a gift certificate for Pretty by JL's signature and custom 3 color heart + matching child or infant charm bracelet set to the Girls Night Out silent auction {a $189 value}...the ultimate gift for the cowgirl diva in your life {or YOU}!

You can buy tickets for Girls Night Out and learn more about the event...taking place this coming Friday, 8.23.13, at beautiful LePlatt's Pond in Bayfield, Colorado...by clicking here.

See you there! JL
